The Pentagons, Then and After
Songs of the 50’s, 60's and 70’s
Featuring Joe C. Jones
#TG1050
These are The Pentagons, a self-contained group, as they appeared on
Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. They wrote their own material, popular
in the 50’s and early 60’s, with songs like the classic “To Be
Loved” (number 48 on the charts) and their 1961 hit “I Wonder”.
Joe C. Jones was in his teens as lead singer for the
group, and went on to become a solo artist for A & M and other labels, and performed many
concert venues. The last four songs on the CD were recorded in the 70’s.
I have produced and been associated with many groups and
artists, but listening to the lead singer of this group, Joe C. Jones, has
always been a satisfying pleasure.
I hope you also enjoy.

Doo Wop, Rhythm & Blues and
Novelties
Treasures of the 50's and 60's
#TG1100
|

This CD is a tribute to all of the many wonderful solo artists and
groups of the 1950's and 60's. Although only some of them were
commercially successful, they all deserved fame and fortune. It is
a compilation of pre-Motown sounds of the early rhythm & blues
and doo wop era which contains treasures and highly sought-after
collectables including the Four Guys (one of the first inter-racial
groups produced in 1953), and The Pentagons, whose recording "To Be
Loved" became a classic.
Also featured is The Laurels' original recording of "Baby
Talk", which was later covered by Jan and Dean, and "Short
Shorts", produced in 1958, only to become the fastest million
selling record at that time due to the airplay it received by the famed
disk jockey Alan Freed. And there are many more in this
package. If you could purchase these recordings individually on
the collector's market, it would cost you several thousands of dollars.
In addition to being a tribute to the artists of the 1950's and 60's, this
CD is a tribute to Lee Silver who produced these recordings. Lee has
the ability to recognize the potential talent in the artists he works
with, some of the more recognizable are The Royal Teens (Bob Gaudio, who
founded the Four Seasons), Al Kooper (who started Blood, Sweat and Tears),
Herb Alpert (of the Tijuana Brass and co-founder of A & M Records),
Bobby Hart (who wrote for and produced The Monkees).
Some vintage cuts have been restored and
remastered as best as possible; due to the age of these recordings, some
artifacts may remain. We hope you enjoy this CD, which takes you
back to the treasured time and music of the 1950's and 60's.

Northern Soul, Rare Gems
#TG222

Oh
my, how we love that California Soul. All due respect to the artists who
never had a chance reaching the major’s shall I say the chartbusters.
Although some were chart makers, others were never such takers like a
brilliant Soul artist named Nathan Williams, who was discovered in 1974
working as a male nurse in a convalescent home. He was discovered by Lee
Silver, a Los Angeles legend producer, song writer and arranger who had a
few masterpiece achievements under his belt. Having major songs like the
Laurels on Spring with “Baby Talk”, which later topped the charts with
Jan & Dean, and also his “Short Shorts” classic by the Royal
Teens, not leaving out my favorite Lee’s gem: The Pentagons, “To
Be Loved” a Hall of Fame masterpiece! Lee had been finding talent
for years, like The Pentagons who also recorded as the Chesterfields on
Phillips, a Buck Ram production.
The
Pentagons lead voice, Joe C. Jones also recorded as the Jones Brothers
with his half brother, Otis Munson, a brilliant duo, completing many great
achievements together. “I remember the family”, says Lee Silver. “I
would use many different groups together, a mix of whoever wanted to try a
new project.
Groups like The Themes, 21st Century, Soul Patrol,
The Jones Brothers and other artists who came in and cut through the
years. I was very fortunate to have such a talented source of artists and
arrangers like Gene Page and Miles Grayson. I have been so lucky to have
such a great family throughout the years”.

Endless…The Legendary Jody Reynolds
#TG1101-2
|
This is Jody’s first American CD after a period away from the music
recording business, where he spent most of his time on his ranch in the
California desert.
Jody is one of this country’s finest musical storytellers and
songwriters, as we know, from his multi-million selling single “Endless
Sleep”.
Jody was popular during the era of Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Eddie
Cochran and Buddy Holly. Whether writing about love, everyday life or
tragedy, Jody is a unique writer with a humanistic touch.
Al Casey, Jimmy Bryant and Les Paul rejoin Jody Reynolds
on several of the selections on this CD. The fifty-three recordings on
this collection date back to 1958 and span Jody’s career through 1980.
The songs on this CD are comprised of Pop-Rock, Country and
Rockabilly. Jody Reynolds will always be remembered as the singer who projected the
essence of “Teardrop Rock”.

I'll
tell you how good this CD is. I'm listening right through it for a final
check on how it sounds technically, I'm up to track 18 and loving it, and
I've just realized there's still four or five of my favorites to come.
Unfortunately it ain't always that way. After you've played a compilation
several times, in the course of getting it ready for production, ear-hole
fatigue usually sets in. Even tracks that are well worthy of inclusion can
drag a bit after the eighth run through, but not on this one Baby.
It helps that Lee Silver's work is
almost as big a pleasant surprise to me as it probably is to you. As
recently as less than two years ago I didn't expect the man who had been
responsible for writing the Royal Teens Short Shorts (covered over here by
none less than Freddie and The Dreamers) to have produced a string of
sublime soul singles throughout the 60s & 70s.It mainly came about
through Lee's management of, and friendship with, the Pentagons. After
their first doo wop hit To Be Loved, the group cut two great early soul
singles for Jamie, one for Philips under the alias of the Chesterfields
and then broke up into two groupings. Lead singer Joe Jones aka Joey Jones
aka Joe C Jones went solo and then returned to Lee's stable in the late
60s as the Jones Brothers with his half-brother and ex-Pentagon Otis
Munson. The rest of the group under the guidance of original group member
Ken Goodloe formed a new outfit, which was known variously as the
Corduroys, Themes, 21st Century and Soul Patrol. It was this
conglomeration that was responsible for a very large proportion of Lee's
soul music output, contributing 11 of the 24 tracks here.
Apart from occasional great lead vocals,
Ken Goodloe wrote most of his groups' material in association with his
brother Ted or Bill James; he sometimes called himself B Goode on the
credits. That was how he described himself on the mysterious Pentagons'
double-sider, Gonna Wait For You / Forever Yours. The first side moves at
a great pace and features the group at its finest in harmonies and traded
lead vocals, while the beautiful ballad flip of Forever Yours harks back
to their successful vocal group days with a beautiful soul song. To make
it more intriguing it seems that it wasn't the Pentagons classic line up
at all, more the Goodloe brothers grouping; it was apparently first issued
as by the Corduroys. As the Themes that group reached the highest peaks
for me with one Minit 45, Bent Out Of Shape / No Explanation Needed and
two terrific unreleased tracks, Do Yourself A Favor / Reminds Me Of You
held in the can for more than thirty years. Having said that, all the 21st
Century tracks are good; the previously unreleased Search The World Over
being a particularly wonderful ballad which exemplifies Lee's symphonic
approach to producing and his ear for a great song.
The Jones Brothers have the biggest
number of individual credits on the CD with six songs. My favourites are
the big ballad sound of That's All Over Baby and their so soulful take on
Good Old Days which utilises the same backing track as Nathan Williams'
ultra rare (and equally good) Lime recording 'What Price'. Apart from
Nathan Williams' 45 there was also a one-off single from Minnie Jones
& The Minuettes whose version of Shadow Of A Memory on Sugar Records
is highly rated by DJs and collectors and adds a female touch to an
otherwise male dominated CD.
However the third major grouping in
Lee's stable also featured females. The Primers aka the Vines consisted of
three guys and two girls from San Diego, and though they only came out
with two released singles, their How Does It Grab You on Hale Records has
proved to be one of the biggest Northern Soul vinyl discoveries of recent
years. They also cut a follow up called It's Laid On You which is pretty
damned hot too and we hope to include that on a later CD of Lee's
material.
Lee's music has been one of the
delightful surprises of the last few years for me and I'm sure Kent fans
will be thrilled too. The fact that he's such a thoroughly nice chap too
has been a bonus for me and the many soul fans who have been contacting
him to pass on their praise and to see whether he has any old Hale singles
lying about anywhere. He doesn't, but you can get all that great music on
this little s(S?)ilver disc.
